Interview

Hello MaNa, first of all I'd like to thank you sincerely for participating in my little project here on Fragbite. You've gotten alot of attention lately on the esport scene but for those who doesn't know who you are, could you make a quick presentation of yourself?

Hello there. My name is Grzegorz Komincz, I come from Poland. I started to play StarCraft II after I switched to it from Brood War. I play Protoss for team mousesports.

As you said yourself you played Brood War before making the switch to StarCraft II, and on a high level aswell. Could you tell us a little bit about the differences between the games and what was better and worse with both Brood War and StarCraft II?

There's a LOT of differences between the games, I can't count every. First of all, StarCraft II is way easier than Brood War. In StarCraft II you have almost everything done automatically, where in Brood War you had to do it by yourself ("automining", "smartcasting", "binding buildings/army").

This makes the competition in StarCraft II harder than in Brood War because if the game is easy, it's easier for more people to get to the higher level, and then its hard to compete because of a high number of good competitors.

I guess one could say that you got known in StarCraft II after you managed to reach the finals at DreamHack Winter 2010. You walked the hard road and played through the BYOC-qualifiers which earned you a spot in the main tournament. After that you managed to go all the way to the finals where you placed 2nd after a really close game against Naama. What did DreamHack Winter 2010 mean for you in terms of overall success and would anything be different if you hadn't done so well at that particular event?

It meant alot to me because it was my first big offline event, first time meeting everybody, first time showing my skills and it looked pretty good then. I don't know what would happen if I wouldn't have gotten that far, I don't want to know because I am happy with how it was.

You're going to participate at this years DreamHack Winter aswell and looking at the list of players, the competition will be super tough! What do you think your chances are for this event and how do you prepare for an event like this?

Because of the very high number of great players there, it's very hard to say what my chances are. I think, like everybody, I do aim for the top 3 in the event but it will be extremely difficult for me to do that. It all depends on my gameplay of the day, if I will feel comfortable or not.

I do not prepare anything special to the event, I try to play a little bit more than usual, just as much as I have free time and then see if the practice is effective to do well in the tournament.

At the very top, how's it like being a Protoss player in the current state of the game? Is there something you'd like to change in order for the game to be more entertaining or balanced?

I find it very hard to win games right now, we don't see many good Protoss players doing well lately. I think that Terran Ghost play and Zerg Broodlord/Infestor composition is too strong, they must nerf it in some way. They just did nerf Ghost's EMP to radius 1.5 from 2.0 but I don't think this is the problem since they always use more than six ghosts so they can EMP all of the army anyway. Blizzard know what is doing so we have to play even when the patch won't fit to us. :)

With the latest patch protoss is getting the cost for upgrades lowered. Do you think this will have enough of an impact on the balance to make Protoss a stronger race at the top level?

No I don't think it really matters, it will help Protoss to get earlier upgrades but I don't think it will matter that much to change the balance in the game.

Recently you played with mouzThorZaIN in a 2v2 game in Evil Geniuses Master's Cup Series League (damn that's a long name for a league). What's your input on team games in StarCraft II and what do you think needs to be done in order for team games to become a bigger part of the esport scene?

I don't think it's really needed in big clan leagues, for me, and I believe for ThorZaIN too, it was so much fun to play 2v2 and especially when it was deciding match or an acematch for an already won clanwar. However, I think the balance is way worse in 2v2 than in 1v1 so I don't think it should be in the team leagues.

Thank you for your time, is there anything you'd like to add before we move on to our duel of cheese in a most honorable fashion?

Thank you as well! :) I'd like to thank all of the StarCraft II community for the support and greet all my friends from Połczyn-Zdrój, biggest shoutouts to mousesports and our sponsors (Razer, GEIL, MEDION, Sansibar, INTEL) for the opportunity to improve. Thanks!
